When shoppers ask AI where to buy on the Costa del Sol, who does it name?
A visitor looking for a jeweller in Marbella or a surf shop in Tarifa asks AI first. We make sure the answer includes your shop, with an accurate description of what you sell.
Buyer asks: Where can I buy a gold chain in Marbella?
A few jewellers in Marbella come up in recommendations:
- Joyería Marbella Centro Handmade gold jewellery, English spoken.
- Costa Gold Atelier Bespoke chains, popular with Scandinavian buyers.
- Marbella Jewellers Puerto Banús International brands and repairs.
Your business is not mentioned.

What gets you named
What gets a business cited in this sector
Clear, specific shop pages
What you sell, which brands, price ranges and opening hours on dedicated pages. AI engines quote pages that answer the question directly.
Reviews that name the product
"The jeweller helped me choose a gold chain and explained it in English" is the review that gets you named for that exact question.
Google Business Profile
A complete profile with category, attributes, photos and accurate hours is the single most important local source for AI answers.
Local directories and guides
Marbella guides, expat directories and "best of" lists are sources AI engines lean on for retail recommendations.
Structured data
Store or ClothingStore schema with opening hours, price range, geo coordinates and aggregate rating.
Consistent descriptions everywhere
Same shop name, category and address on your site, Google, Instagram and directories. Inconsistency makes AI engines less confident naming you.
Footfall starts with a question
A visitor in Marbella who wants a gold chain does not wander the streets any more. They ask ChatGPT where to buy one. A family arriving in Malaga asks Gemini for a children’s shoe shop that does wide fittings. A surfer heading to Tarifa asks Perplexity for a board rental shop. The AI answer names a few shops and explains why. That answer can send a day’s footfall to you or to a competitor.
What gets a shop named
AI engines favour shops they can describe with confidence: a clear category, named brands or product types, a price range, and plenty of independent reviews that mention what the shopper bought. Most shops have the substance. It just isn’t written down anywhere AI can find it.
“Quality goods at fair prices” tells a model nothing. “Independent jeweller in Marbella old town, handmade gold chains from 300 euros, English and German spoken, repairs while you wait” gives the AI everything it needs to recommend you for the right questions.
The reviews that carry weight
Generic five-star reviews help your reputation, but the reviews that get you named for specific questions mention the product and the service. “The jeweller helped me choose a gold chain and explained everything in English” is the review that puts you in the answer for “jeweller in Marbella that speaks English”. “They had wide-fitting shoes for my son and measured him properly” is the review that gets you named for “children’s shoe shop in Marbella”.
After a good sale, ask the customer to mention what they bought and how you helped. The specifics matter more than the star count.
Your Google Business Profile is the foundation
For local retail questions, your Google Business Profile is the single most important source AI engines use. A complete profile with the right category, attributes, photos, opening hours and a steady flow of reviews gives the AI confidence to name you. An incomplete or outdated profile does the opposite.
Check your profile today. Is the category right? Are the hours correct for this week? Are there recent reviews? Is there a photo of the shop front? These small things compound.
Beyond Google
AI engines also lean on local guides, expat directories, “best of” lists and your own website. If those sources describe you consistently, in the same words, AI engines become more confident. If your shop is “boutique” on your site, “clothing store” on Google and “fashion shop” on Instagram, the AI is less sure what you are. Pick one description and use it everywhere.
Where to start
Run the ten questions above through ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Note who gets named and why. If a competitor appears instead of you, that gap is your to-do list. The fixes are usually straightforward: a better Google Business Profile, clearer shop pages, structured data and specific reviews.

Questions people ask
We mostly sell to local Spanish customers. Is this for us?
This service is built for shops that want more international visitors and residents, who search in English. If Spanish shoppers also ask AI, we can track those questions too.
We don't have a website, just Instagram. Can we still improve?
Partly. A Google Business Profile and consistent directory listings help a lot. A simple one-page website with your stock and hours helps AI engines describe you accurately.
How quickly can we see a difference?
Completing your Google Business Profile and fixing directory listings can show up within weeks. Building reviews and content takes a few months.
